Most IT teams handle retired hardware the same way: box it up, call a recycler, and hope the data on those drives never surfaces again. That approach routinely costs companies six figures per refresh cycle, and it leaves real money on the table.

The better question isn't "how do we get rid of this?" It's "what is this equipment still worth?" A solid ITAD program treats disposal as the last option, not the default.

What Is IT Asset Disposition (ITAD)?

 IT Asset Disposition is the structured process of retiring end-of-life IT equipment in a way that protects data, satisfies compliance requirements, recovers value, and reduces environmental impact. It picks up where IT asset management leaves off — at the point a device is no longer needed in production. 

Gartner breaks the ITAD market into three service categories. A serious provider covers all three:

  • Core disposition services —  Secure data sanitization, recycling, physical destruction, and reporting 
  • Secondary hardware services —  Buying back used equipment from clients
  • Ancillary lifecycle services —  Software harvesting, redeployment, logistics, and chain-of-custody documentation 

If a vendor only covers one of these categories, you'll end up coordinating two or three separate providers to get through a single refresh cycle. That means more contracts, more handoffs, and more places for things to go wrong.

 Every ITAD engagement comes down to one question per asset: where does this go? There are five possible answers, and the right one depends on the asset class — not a blanket policy applied across the board.

Most ITAD providers default to recycling or destruction. It's the simplest workflow for them — and it costs you. A modern Cisco switch, an HPE storage shelf, or a stack of recent laptops can carry real resale value long after the OEM has moved on to the next product line. Routing those assets straight to a shredder or a recycling bin means that value never comes back to you.

Why "Buy-Back-First" Beats "Destroy-First"

Most ITAD providers lead with secure destruction. That's not wrong — destruction has its place — but it's the wrong first question.

A buy-back-first model evaluates every retired asset for resale value before routing it anywhere. Devices with market demand get monetized. Everything else gets redeployed, recycled, or destroyed based on what it's actually worth. The disposition path follows the data, not a default.
